One of the biggest dangers and threats when travelling abroad, is that you can catch a serious illness or become injured. Travel insurance is a must when goiing abroad, since it is supposed to help overcome the difficulty of consulting a foreign medical team or the expensive medical treatment.
Travel insurance usually includes cover for emergency medical and related expenses, personal liability cover, personal accident insurance, and cover for baggage and personal assets and the option is available to increase the coverage in one or more aspects (the premium increases according to the change).
There are, however, two problems with travel insurance. It is not given the priority it should get, and what if the coverage doesn't deliver what it promised to be.
The former problem are only noticed when disaster strikes, and then, in many cases it is too late. Travelleres should treat travel insurance in the same way as they treat their passport and traveller's cheques.
Concerning the second problem, the circumstances and places where travel policies are sold do not encourage a detailed inspection of the policy. Also, travel agents issuing travel insurance are often not qualified to discuss the details of the policy. It can also happen that the policy is inadequately explained and the small print often do not give enough details on how one should go about claiming.
It is up to the insured to make sure he or she understands the terms and conditions. You can only protect yourself if you get acquinted with the policy by taking the take the time and trouble to inspect the conditions of the coverage.
